Dark Mode PDF — Night-Reading Copy, Free & Private

Convert any PDF to a dark theme for night reading. Soft charcoal background, off-white text — entirely in your browser.

Convert any PDF to a dark theme for night reading. Uses a soft charcoal background and off-white text — not harsh pure black and white. Uses the same PyMuPDF blend-mode annotations that Chrome actually displays.

Who uses Dark Mode PDF

  • Reading a textbook or long paper in a dim room without a glowing white page.
  • Avoiding the letter-bloom you get from a full black/white invert, especially with astigmatism.
  • Keeping original, selectable text instead of flattening pages to images.

Make a night-reading PDF in 3 steps

  • 1. Drop your PDF in the tool above (up to 100 MB).
  • 2. Pick a theme — Comfort (default), Warm night, or High contrast — and check the first-page preview.
  • 3. Download *-dark.pdf.

Frequently asked questions

Does text stay selectable?

Yes — pages are not rasterized. A blend-mode overlay sits on top of the original content, so fonts, layout, search, and copy stay intact.

Why not a plain black-and-white invert?

Pure white on pure black is about 21:1 contrast. It looks crisp for a second, then letters bloom or vibrate (halation), especially with astigmatism. Comfort aims for roughly 12:1–15:1 on a charcoal #121212 page.

What if the PDF is already dark?

We sample the corners of page 1. If it already looks dark, we warn you before continuing — a double invert looks awful.

Do scanned / image-only PDFs work?

Yes — pixels are remapped. OCR is not required. Photos and syntax colors are remapped too in this version.

Do forms and links stay clickable?

Yes — the overlay covers the page without removing form fields or link annotations.

Is dark mode always easier?

It helps in a dim room. In a bright room, light PDFs are often easier to read.

Is my file uploaded?

Yes, briefly, so we can run the PyMuPDF converter — the temp file is deleted after download. If upload is blocked, conversion finishes in your browser with the same overlay.
